Duties:

Economic Specialist plays a crucial role in managing the essential economic relationship between Ukraine and the United States. They are responsible for monitoring and analyzing developments across various sectors, including macro-finance, banking, energy, science and technology, trade, investment, commercial growth, sanctions, agriculture, infrastructure, civil aviation, and economic reforms. With expertise in these areas and an understanding of Ukraine’s economic dealings with key partners like the EU and China, the specialist liaises with elite Ukrainian and global companies, senior government officials, and NGOs. Moreover, they represent the Embassy at important GOU events, draft insightful reports, and deliver briefings to senior embassy officials.

A successful employee will work in one of the portfolios as described below:

Portfolio 1:

Serves as the Economic Specialist responsible for supporting the Cybersecurity and Environment, Science, Technology and Health (ESTH) portfolio. In this capacity, tracks legislation, writes summaries of meetings, tracks news articles, and supports events related to cyber security, technology and innovation, health and environmental topics, and bilateral scientific cooperation. Cultivates and maintains contacts with government officials, NGOs, international organizations, and with key representatives of the tech, health, science, and cyber communities. Drafts meeting summaries, provides detailed readouts of events, tracks news articles, and supports events for the Economic section.

Portfolio 2:

Serves at Economic Specialist responsible for a portfolio of issues related to the critically important bilateral economic relationship with Ukraine. Analyzes developments in assigned sectors drawn from infrastructure, agriculture, industry, including defense, state-owned enterprise (SOE) and corporate governance. Possesses expert knowledge in the areas assigned, and relating to Ukraine’s major trading partners, including the EU and China. Maintains contacts with relevant Ukrainian and international companies, Government of Ukraine officials and the NGOs. Represents the Embassy at relevant meetings and conferences, drafts reports, and briefs Embassy management.

Portfolio 3:

Serves at Economic Specialist supporting the defense, political and economic reforms unit of the Economic Section, responsible for a portfolio of issues related to the critically important bilateral economic relationship with Ukraine. Analyzes developments in assigned sectors drawn from EU accession, defense, trade, Rada watcher and liaison with Political Section, economic reforms, small or midsize enterprise (SEM), including women entrepreneurs, oligarchs, and China. Possesses expert knowledge in the areas assigned, and relating to Ukraine’s major trading partners, including the EU and China. Maintains contacts with relevant Ukrainian and international companies, Government of Ukraine officials and the NGO sector. Represents the Embassy at relevant meetings and conferences, drafts reports, and briefs Embassy senior management.

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of relevant experience working on economic, energy, or finance issues at a professional level in the public sector, private sector, or academic institutions. This must include experience translating and interpreting.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: A deep understanding of political, economic, social, and cultural dynamics is essential, along with a comprehensive grasp of economics in both the public and private sectors.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields is required: economics, energy, political science, international relations, and/or journalism.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated analytical abilities. Proficient in advanced word processing and spreadsheet management. Refined public speaking capabilities. Skilled in composing English language letters, memoranda, and reports requiring minimal revisions. Competent in performing precise written and oral translations of intricate technical documents.
