Assignment
Under the supervision of the IMPACT GIS Officer, the IMPACT GIS Assistant is responsible for the support of the processes and outputs related to spatial data processing and mapping in the country. She/he will support all GIS and mapping activities with IMPACT team in country and in Geneva. He/she will conduct office work, but also might conduct field trips.
This position is intended for people with disabilities only.
FUNCTIONS
1. GIS activities
The IMPACT GIS Assistant will support overall GIS activities in Ukraine. In close coordination with IMPACT GIS Officer, he/she will support the development of maps for IMPACT and its partners. Furthermore, he/she will support the assessment team in the collection and management of spatial datasets, verification, cleaning, and updating of the collected data. It might be necessary to assist technically during trainings within GIS capacity building program for NGOs or local authorities.
2. Data Visualization activities
The IMPACT GIS Assistant will support the overall development of tools and dashboard to visualize IMPACT spatial data in an interactive manner using web-mapping tools. Under the overall guidance of the assessment team the assistant will be responsible for transforming static IMPACT products into dashboards that can be shared with external partners.
3. Remote Sensing Analysis activities
The IMPACT GIS Assistant will support activities directed to the analysis of freely available optical and radar satellite imagery, and high-resolution images obtained within partnership frameworks with aim to estimate conflict-related damage on infrastructure and environment.
4. Confidentiality and Data Protection
The IMPACT GIS Assistant will maintain the strictest confidentiality of data and processes. He/she will actively take measures to prevent the unauthorized sharing of information and data.
Qualifications
- Full working proficiency in English required;
- Bachelor degree or equivalent professional experience in GIS, Cartography, Geodesy, Geography, Environmental Science, Information Systems or any relevant discipline;
- Essential minimum technical qualifications:
- Experience with ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro or QGIS;
- Understanding of basic cartography concepts and map design principles;
- Understanding of remote sensing data (satellite imagery data sources and general processing approaches);
- Data processing and analysis experience using Excel / R;
- Desirable technical qualifications:
- Experience with any web-mapping tools (ArcGIS Online, Leaflet) is a strong asset;
- Experience in the area of web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, R Shiny) is a strong asset.
- Experience with environmental monitoring data collection and processing from both national Ukrainian monitoring services and global datasets.
- 1-2 years of experience in GIS field, preferably in humanitarian context is an asset;
- Presence of any relevant portfolio (GitHub account, web based-dashboard, OSM mapper profile, published maps) is a strong asset;
- Good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to think creatively in terms of tool and process development and optimization;
- Flexibility and adaptability to ever-changing needs and responsibilities;
- Ability to work independently;
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
- Experience in international team is an asset
- Ability to learn new concepts/build technical skills quickly
