About the job 

The ICRC Weapon Contamination Unit recruits a Weapon Contamination (WeC) Field Officer to be based in its Kharkiv office. The WeC Field Officer implements directly or supports the implementation and monitoring of ICRC WeC activities. S/he contributes directly to ensuring staff safety and the continuation of critical operations, helping vulnerable people, and supporting National Societies (NS) in situations where conventional or non-conventional weapon contamination poses a hazard.

Start date: as soon as possible, preferably by 15 June 2024 

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Promote the understanding and implementation of the Movement’s Strategy on Landmines, Cluster Munitions and other Explosive Remnants of War and the Preventive Mine Action Operations Framework
  • Act as a technical reference for any related Weapon Contamination issues and provide guidance on weapon contamination, including the development, planning and implementation and monitoring of Planning for Results objectives
  • Deliver appropriate direct Risk Awareness and Safer Behavior to target groups
  • Assist in assessments on the extent and the type of the weapon contamination threat and develop/implement relevant mine action activities to prevent incidents among civilian population (e.g. risk reduction activities)
  • Provide support for all activities, aimed to increase capacity of relevant national Mine Action actors (State Emergency Services in Ukraine, Special Transport Service, Ukrainian Armed Forces) in his/her area of responsibility
  • Promote, support, and directly implement WeC activities, whenever is needed and relevant, such as Risk Awareness and Safer Behavior, Risk reduction, Non-Technical Survey, Marking and other WeC activities
  • Provide security briefings on weapons contamination for ICRC and Movement staff working in affected areas, and act as a reference point on protection against weapon contamination
  • Contribute to the integral approach of the sub delegation, by providing WeC expertise through transversal way and jointly participate in assessment, analysis, implementation, and monitoring of relevant ICRC activities, with aim to reduce impact and number of mine/explosive remnants or war accidents
  • Write field trip reports based on given guidelines
  • Provide contributions to other specific reports when asked
  • Ensure necessary administrative work is completed, and/or, implemented on time, e.g. reporting

About you

To be successful as a WeC Field Officer in the ICRC Weapon Contamination Unit, you should possess the following qualifications and experiences and have the following characteristics:   

  • Ukrainian citizenship or permanent residence permit in Ukraine
  • Relevant degree from university or technical college
  • At least 3 years of overall professional experience
  • 2 years of work experience in WeC/mine action or a similar field
  • Previous experience with the ICRC or other humanitarian agency is desirable
  • Fluent command of English, Ukrainian, and Russian
  • Computer literate
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn
  • Ability to work independently, as well as under supervision
  • Confidence in managing projects
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work within a diverse team and establish and maintain good working relations in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary environment
