NPA’s international work covers three core areas: Mine Action and Disarmament, Democratisation and Just distribution of power and resources, and Humanitarian Action and Crises response. NPA is opening a Mine Action and Disarmament program to protect civilians from the threats posed by explosive ordnance (EO) in Ukraine.
NPA is looking for a qualified and experienced Field Assistant/Interpreter of the English Language to work in the Mykolaiv.
The position is based in Mykolaiv with frequent business trips as required and approved by Security Department.
General Responsibilities:
Work within the framework of NPA core values
Act as an ambassador for NPA, representing the organization professionally and in full adherence to the NPA Code of Conduct
Adhere to all NPA policies, regulations and procedures
Maintain and care for all equipment issued by NPA and for any loss or damage, you will be liable for repair or replacement
Follow all verbal and/or written instructions, unless in direct violation of safety and the duty of care
Principal Responsibilities
To provide clear and accurate spoken interpretations between NPA MDD TFMs, MDD TL and non-English speaking persons to include NPA national staff, local authorities, informants, security forces, and others.
To operate in field environments facilitating the survey and clearance as a focal point for communication.
On occasion, provide short written translations from English to Ukrainian, Ukrainian to English, of technical NPA documents, Government letters/documents or general administrative matters as tasked by NPA’s Senior Technical Field Manager.
Work in the field with the teams as translator.
To keep an accurate record of all translation tasks, their status/delivery and assignee.
To be flexible and prioritise tasks according to their importance.
Drives the vehicle for transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of equipment, stores, documents and any other items as required.
Responsible for looking after the allocated duty vehicle including all daily maintenance checks, mileage and fuel usage records and ensuring regular and timely services are conducted.
Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents
Ensure that the driving rules of the Government of Ukraine are adhered to.
Report all accidents and incidents involving staff or NPA’s equipment.
Meet all NPA’s requirements as outlined in the vehicle policy.
Any other duties as tasked by their management/superiors.
Additional Responsibilities
Hold Agresso system access to raise Purchase Requisitions (PRs) in full compliance with established procedures and instructions provided by MDD senior staff.
Prepare, submit, and monitor travel requests for MDD local personnel, ensuring accuracy, timely approvals, and adherence to organizational travel policies.
Prepare and process leave requests for MDD local personnel, coordinating approvals and maintaining accurate records.
Prepare and submit official letters to the Security team to obtain access authorization for MDD personnel to the SESU base in Romny.
Liaise and coordinate with Human Resources, Finance, and Logistics departments on behalf of the MDD team to support operational and administrative requirements.
Ensure timely submission of monthly deployment plan updates to HR and Finance teams to facilitate workforce planning, payroll, and operational location forecasting.
Ensure regular updating, organization, and maintenance of MDD and handler-related documentation on SharePoint, ensuring data accuracy, version control, and accessibility.
Support the MDD team by carrying out additional administrative and operational tasks as assigned by MDD senior staff, contributing to the smooth and efficient functioning of MDD operations.
The holder of the position is to abide by the policies set by the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), the NPA Programme in Ukraine and to represent the organisation in a loyal and responsible manner.
Strictly adhere to NPA’s rules regarding confidentiality of information.
Required qualifications:
Education:
Must have:
High school education
Verbal and written proficiency in English
Native speaker in Ukrainian
Computer literacy
Desirable:
Education in English language
Overall understanding of Humanitarian Mine Action
Experience:
Must have:
Valid Driving Licence, category B.
Desirable:
Professional experience of working with humanitarian NGOs.
Former professional translation and interpreting experience.
Professional experience of working in humanitarian mine action projects.
Experience in translation of trainings and workshops.
Other qualifications:
Excellent communication skills
Personal Competencies:
Travel with MDD teams to Romny as required, including periodic visits for monthly testing and support during the winter stand?down period.
Good interpersonal skills
Able to work effectively under, and adapt to difficult conditions
Willingness & ability to travel within the country
Willing to adjust working hours because of the weather and other operational conditions
